Tata Punch is a new mini-cross, why don’t we «try on» the novelty for ourselves

The striking 2019 Tata H2X concept car has been serialized. As soon as Indians hope that Punch will become the main bestseller of the brand, why don’t we “try on” the novelty for ourselves?

The specifics of Indian legislation are encouraging automakers to produce compact crossovers with an overall length of about four meters, such as, for example, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet. However, the new product from Tata, known primarily as the manufacturer of the super budgetary, but not super successful Nano model, has a slightly different format: the Punch is only 3827 mm long with a wheelbase of 2445 mm, a width of 1742 mm and 1615 mm. That is, the car occupies an intermediate position between the mentioned crossovers and real superminis, like a fresh

By the way, all these models have one thing in common: they have only front-wheel drive, these are the laws of the budget genre.

At the heart of «Punch» is the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) platform with McPherson front suspension and a torsion beam at the rear, on which the Indians built the Tata Altroz hatchback a couple of years ago. The power unit was also borrowed from him: a three-cylinder naturally aspirated Revotron 1.2 engine with a capacity of 86 hp. with., equipped with a «start-stop» system, works in tandem with either a manual transmission, or with a simple «robot» based on it. Later, a more powerful turbo version may appear, but now the rich versions offer a multimedia system with a seven-inch display, a rear-view camera, a rain sensor, climate and cruise control. By default, cars will be equipped with air conditioning, ABS, front power windows and a pair of front airbags, but side airbags and stabilization systems are not even on the list of options.

An important trump card of the car should be a spectacular design with angular wheel arches, three-level head optics and a «floating» roof. Sure, the Tata H2X concept, unveiled in March 2019, looked more aggressive, but the Punch inherited many «tasty» details from it, such as the characteristic taillights and tailgate handles hidden on the pillars.

Among other interesting details — side doors swinging open at 90 degrees, 19-centimeter ground clearance and a ford depth of 37 centimeters. On the streets of Russian cities during the rainy season, there are puddles and deeper, but such cars would not hurt us, especially taking into account the price: there is no Indian price list yet, but the expected initial figure is 550 thousand rupees, which are almost equal to our rubles.
