About a new car from Ford — what’s so interesting about this model

Concerns Ford and Volkswagen

Although not mentioned in the press release, the new Ford is based on the MQB platform and is equipped with German engines, transmissions and electronic systems, and de facto we are talking about a clone

First, the designers of Ford re-painted the nose — there is a branded «flat» hood, and recognizable headlights; the characteristic radiator grille is responsible for the continuity with the past Tourneo, in addition, the stamping of the fenders has changed relative to the Caddy.

There are fewer differences at the back: the lanterns have a different structure (although the parts are completely interchangeable with the Caddy), and the fifth door differs in a different stamping under the number. In addition, «Ford» has original rims.

The interior architecture of the Tourneo Connect is fundamentally the same as the “digital cockpit” in the Caddy, but the American engineers still managed to transfer a few buttons. For example, the windscreen control is centered rather than on the left in a single unit with light control. In addition, the knob of the manual transmission, the steering wheel and the design of the front panel have been changed. However, the basic multimedia system with an 8.25-inch touchscreen is the same, for a surcharge a virtual dashboard with a 10.25-inch diagonal and an infotainment complex with a 10-inch touchscreen and a built-in modem are available.

It is curious that Ford marks the Volkswagen units in its own way, that is, the base 1.5-liter TSI petrol engine is now called EcoBoost, the optional 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel is called EcoBlue, and the DSG preselective “robot” on Tourneo Connect is branded, like Powershift. However, the characteristics of the «turbo four» after the renaming have changed slightly. The 1.5 petrol engine develops 114 horsepower and 220 Nm, combined with a 6-speed «mechanics» and a 7-speed «robot»; the 2.0 diesel can deliver 112 forces and 280 Nm or 122 forces and 320 Nm, and the two-pedal version is available only for the more powerful version.

For the first time in history, the Ford Tourneo Connect has a four-wheel drive with a rear axle clutch, but this combination is available only for diesel compact vans with a 122-horsepower turbo engine and «mechanics». But the passenger «heel» under the American brand will not have bi-fuel units and a «junior» 75-horsepower diesel engine.

Since the bodies of the Caddy and Tourneo Connect are the same, the capacity is identical — the short-wheelbase version can hold 2.6 cubic meters, the long-wheelbase version — up to 3.1 cubic meters. Three rows of seats is an option, but you can order it in any configuration.

A close relationship with the leading-edge Volkswagens allowed Tourneo Connect to acquire options unusual for commercial vehicles. For example, the top-end compact MPV can recognize road signs and pedestrians, there is adaptive cruise control with automatic braking and lane control, a car parker, navigation with real-time updates and even a panoramic roof.

Since the Ford Tourneo Connect vans have not yet been introduced, their life cycle continues. The utilitarian versions of the novelty, which cannot be ordered with a sports package and other «excesses», will be shown within a few months.

An informal «revenge» from Volkswagen will take the «blue oval» very soon when the mid-size Ranger pickup is presented. Ford was responsible for the development of the model, and

In Russia, Ford will definitely not see the new Tourneo Connect, but we have Volkswagen Caddy
